Katie Couric revealed on Wednesday that she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery and radiation treatment to treat the tumor this summer.

Couric, 65, was diagnosed at the beginning of summer and reported on Tuesday that she underwent her final radiation treatment.

Couric's first spouse, Jay Monahan, died of colon cancer in 1998 at the age of 41, and her sister Emily died of pancreatic cancer in 2001 at 54.

Katie went on to co-found the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance and later Stand Up to Cancer in 2008.

"Given the history of my family, why should I be spared?" "My reaction shifted from "Why me?" to "Why not me?" Katie expresses herself in her essay.

Katie was diagnosed with breast cancer on June 21, 2022, the day before her eighth wedding anniversary.

Katie's tumour was HER2neu-negative, her doctor informed her it was "quite curable, especially as it was diagnosed early."

HER2 is a protein that promotes the growth of breast cancer cells. However, HER2-negative tumours, such as Katie's, do not grow as quickly.

Her surgery was scheduled for July 14, 2022 which was followed by radiation and meds from September 7 till September 27.

"Why am I telling you this?" she said. "Well, given that I am the 'screen queen' of colon cancer, it seemed natural to use this as a moment that could save someone's life."
